Minecraft

1.2.5 came out today, and we have upgraded and hopefully it will continue to fix bugs. We are pretty much stable now, and I hope to get some more time to play here soon.

In the past month- ur… week… AGOA has two new groups. The highlander team and the AGOA tabletop group. Both on Facebook. Anyway it’s awesome to have groups and people joining it. I would love to get the word out and get more people involved. I have the capacity for more people on AGOA, but not enough people.

Websites and crap

I am experimenting with clustering with linux server for a redundant web service. I need to find time to play with it. But once it’s up all web traffic and DNS will be redundant, and one server can shut down, and all of my sites will still be up. Now I have to be concerned about is bandwidth…

And I also am still making money on ads. I NEED MONEY FOR AGOA.

If you didn’t know, all profit that AGOA makes goes to a charity or foundation of the communities choice. Now that doesn’t mean all the money from ads goes to foundations. PROFIT. AGOA costs me money, and I do it to provide free services for you guys. Once those bills are taken care of, the rest goes to wherever.

Getting people—

I would like to see more people join AGOA. We have a few players, but I would like to have a lot more. Why do I want to cause more traffic and have more stress of keeping all of my crap up? Well, this is my future. This kind of thing is what I’ll be doing for the rest of my life. I enjoy every moment of IT work, and I enjoy working on AGOA, and providing services for you guys. I would like to gain more knowledge and experience in this field, but it doesn’t work if no body plays or anything.

What you can do —

You guys can help AGOA! How? By telling people. Telling them to play, or join. Tell me if you have services that you want. Games or whatever.

That’s all. You can see a lot of changes in AGOA, but only if I can get more people. Talk with me over the forum, or whatever. I want to hear input from you guys, and I want you guys to have what you want. The only reason I’m doing this is because people play.

Anyway, I spent a lot of time setting up this crap, and I think it paid off. Because we have more people than a standard TF2 server will hold! Moving on.

We strung over 1000ft of ethernet and still didn’t have enough. I threw together a crappy game server for file transfers, and downloading games. It was maxed out quite a bit while downloading crap.

So my internet was going crazy for a while, and I couldn’t pin point where. At times, we were pushing 35 megs down o_O

But I have been making changes. The forum is kind of being used a bit more, but people still lack on creating and communicating.

Minecraft 1.0 came out, and that’s cool, because I started playing again, and so have others. Small website changes have been made, menus and titles have been fixed.

game.agoasite.com is not the focus of right now. I’m debating on keeping AGOA and games kind of spread apart, or trying to integrate them a bit more. For example, right now games is just a game development site. Do I keep it that way or do I make it also a game info location? I guess I’ll ask the forum.

Minecraft:

I’ve updated overviewer so now night and day renders, causing less problems, and giving people a cool look at night. Meanwhile on my server, space becomes more and more scarce as my little 30 gb’s is eaten away.

Now that Minecraft has been updated, people are free to roam. FREE TO ROAM, so jump around take off your pants and explore. Although exploring it cool, it’s crap like this guys.

 This is kind of annoying. But we’ll fix it. Some people lack the ability to respect people’s servers, and the hard work, and MONEY they put into it. It’s all good, but NEVER FORGET.

Also spoiler alert: Minecraft 1.0 is awesome!

Amount of players on our server is still small. Which sucks, because we should have more.

If you’ve read before, you’ll see what I would like to do with the site, but moving on. CHANGES!

• I’ve changed the theme from light to dark. This will allow nerds to see text without straining their eyes
• I’ve fixed menus and crap, so we can expand
• I am looking into site analyzers for traffic
• Desert squid will probably always be the picture
• I am a pretty pony

Apart from bloggness I want to spit out a few facts.

• We will still have a whitelist
• No bukkit or mods (for the time being)
• New map. Old one will be available for download
• Admins will be kept to a minimum. I will have two other admins besides me. Alec, and Morgan.
• Most likely I will be updating the server at school. CAL hopefully. So It may have to wait until I get out of school
• Maps will begin rendering the night of the update

Concerns

Rendering – It’s possible that the whole new structure will cause the map rendering program to. Well die. If this happens we will have to rely on in game maps, and wait until a new map rendering program comes out.

Lack of players – I want as many people as possible.

Down time – I’m not too worried about this, but it’s possible. If this happens, I will do my best to get my server online. I cannot predict drunks on the road running into poles with fiber on them.

Hackers/Greifing – I am letting my guard down on this one, due to bukkit being late. I want this to be an awesome update, and this is not possible when bukkit is late. So the white list is my only defense against the WORLD. Backups will be postponed until I fixed the cronjobs.

Cronjob issues – I have had no need to test it but if someone is playing on the map, while the map is being update, if someone were to place a block or something, could the map start to become corrupted? I don’t know. Most likey not because the map is saved almost all the time, so the disk is always writing, and one or two blocks in not a big deal. So I’m not putting my complete fate in the backups.

Chunk errors – They exist. And I don’t think I can avoid them all the time. Pre terminated a screen or a power outage has caused issues, and I hope to have enough knowledge so I can prevent these. My server is hosted in a legit(meh) datacenter and has no downtime. UPS’s keep ALL THE SERVERS up for ten minutes when the power goes out. But we have a generator that kicks in 10 seconds after the power has gone out, so yeah. But I speak from experience, that generator does not start when all the anti freeze is gone. But that is a once in a lifetime thing.

Get away from the depressing stuff, the update should be cool.
